Jobless drug user arrested in Hong Kong on suspicion of killing waitress girlfriend after fight and hiding body under bunk bed

  • Police suspect the man had been using drug ‘Ice’ heavily before beating woman during an argument at her flat in Po Lam Estate
  • Officers became suspicious that the suspect may have murdered his girlfriend after they arrested him over a separate investigation

A 46-year-old man presumed to be high on drugs has been arrested on suspicion of killing his girlfriend and hiding her body under a bunk bed in her public housing flat in Hong Kong.

Police suspect the jobless Hong Kong man had been heavily using the drug “Ice”, or methamphetamine, before he had a fight with the 34-year-old waitress at her flat in Po Kim House, Po Lam Estate, Tseung Kwan O, three or four days ago, when she was last seen.

After the incident he rented a room in a Kowloon City guest house.

Police arrested him on Tuesday night in a separate investigation involving possession of an offensive weapon.

During their inquiries, officers became suspicious that he may have murdered his girlfriend. Police took the suspect back to the flat on Wednesday morning.

Acting Superintendent Wilson Tam Wai-shun, from Kowloon East regional crime headquarters, said the woman’s body was found in a storage area under the lower deck of the bunk bed.

A blanket covered the body, which had started to swell. There were bruises on the body and suspected ligature marks on the woman’s wrists and legs.

The man had moved into the flat a month ago.

Tam said investigators believed the woman might have been beaten during a fight over domestic issues. The man was detained for inquiries.

Officers collected three blankets and parts of the bed for investigation on Wednesday night.

A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the woman’s cause of death.
