STREETSBORO, Ohio -- Firefighters are crediting smoke detectors for alerting two people and allowing them to escape a house fire early Wednesday morning.

However, the fire on the 8900 block of Crystal Court did cause more than $100,000 in damage to the two-story home, the fire department says in a news release.

The two occupants of the home and their dog were out of the house when firefighters arrived just after 1 a.m. They were sleeping but were awakened by smoke detectors.

Investigators say the fire was accidental, starting outside on a deck, extending up the side of the home and making its way inside between the first and second floor. An exact cause was not released.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to help the residents.

Firefighters from Aurora, Kent, Twinsburg, Mantua-Shalersville and Reminderville assisted.
