The financially struggling U.S. Postal Service said Tuesday that it plans to review closing 178 Iowa post offices.View list of potential Iowa offices to close below...The potential closures are part of a proposed plan to cut 3,700 retail offices around the country that was announced at a news conference on Tuesday morning. The Postal Service has close to 32,000 locations.“Today, more than 35 percent of the Postal Service’s retail revenue comes from expanded access locations such as grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, open 24/7,” said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business.” In fiscal year 2010, the Postal Service suffered a $8.5 billion net loss, compared to a loss of $3.8 billion the prior year.The streamlining plan would replace some locations with village post offices, which would be located and operated by retail stores like as pharmacies, grocery stores and other retailers. These offices would offer postal products and services like stamps and flat-rate packaging.“By working with third-party retailers, we’re creating easier, more convenient access to our products and services when and where our customers want them,” Donahoe said. “The Village Post Office will offer another way for us to meet our customers’ needs.”The following list was released by the Postal Service on Tuesday.
