Wayland's three-sport athlete Rory Bessinger loves challenge of competing at No. 1 singles

WAYLAND -- Too much is never enough for Wayland Union all-around standout Rory Bessinger, who represents the Wildcats in many different areas and is getting the most out of his extra-curricular career.

Currently this fall, Bessinger is the team captain of the boys tennis team and the No. 1 singles player.

"Our No. 1 singles is Rory Bessinger," Wayland coach Cheri Ritz stated. "He is very deserving of this because he is captain of our team and leads by example."

Bessinger recently defeated Wyoming, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, to increase his overall record at first singles to 5-8. He had a great match with South Christian, losing 4-6, 6-4, 1-6. He also defeated Otsego 6-4, 6-1.

Bessinger not only fronts the tennis team, but also spends his Friday nights on the field taking part in another one of his pursuits.

"Along with being a three-sport athlete, Rory is a member of our band," Ritz commented. "He is a drummer in our marching band and excels there also. This type of athlete is hard to find nowadays. As a coach, it is gratifying to find a kid who excels at three sports and also participates in the band."

Of course, Coach Ritz wanted to stress just how strong an athlete Bessinger is, especially playing three sports.

"He leads by example and chooses to do the right thing," she said. "Rory is a three-sport athlete and his athleticism shows on the court. He was a member of our golf team which competed in the state finals, and also a member of our swim team in which he also competed at the state meet in swimming."

With such a hectic schedule, Bessinger makes it work. He is a strong role model and has earned the respect of his younger teammates.

"Rory is very positive with the underclassmen and takes them under his wing and helps them with their game, a ride, injuries, you name it," Coach Ritz explained. "Rory is there for them and helps them on and off the court. He is fun to coach and has a positive presence daily.

"Not only that, but Rory is a hard worker and loves to compete against the best. He loves the challenge of competing against the best player from every school. We are in a difficult OK Gold Conference, but he takes on the challenge with a positive attitude. He is a pleasure to coach and works hard to improve his game."
