Studies show that clothing sizing is more disparate than ever before, but that shouldn't discourage you from finding ways to get the right fit for your body type.

While there isn't a universal method for determining traditional sizes, focusing on fit rather than size is most ideal.

Whether you are looking for a great pair of go-to jeans or a blazer you can throw on with everything, there are tried-and-true tips to use as a rule of thumb when shopping for the perfect fit.

With that, Good Housekeeping magazine style director Lori Bergamotto shared her best advice with "Good Morning America" on how to find the right fit for three different closet staples.

Measure & Made

Tip 1: If you can fit more than two fingers into the waistband of your jeans they are too large, but if you can't fit even one they are too small. Note: Jeans will stretch up to about a half size after normal wear.

Tip 2: Moderation is key when it comes to the rise of your jeans. Mid-rise is generally the most flattering, because it's an easier fit that provides more structure around your midsection.

Tip 3: When you're shopping for a pair of staple jeans, ignore the trends! Keep it simple.

Button-down shirts

Tip 1: Look for a shirt that has darts, especially if you have a larger chest. It's an easy way to add shape and it reins in a lot of extra fabric.

Tip 2: To test if your shirt is too small, stand up straight and hold your hands together behind your back. If the shirt gapes, it's too small.

Tip 3: If you hold your arm out, your side seams should not be touching your armpit.

AQUA

Tip 1: To check if it is too small, do a hug test. If you are unable to comfortably hug yourself, size up.

Tip 2: If you are testing if it is too big, pay attention to the shoulders. The shoulder seam should hit right at the end of your shoulder. If it extends beyond your shoulder, it's too big.

Tip 3: You should be able to comfortably button your blazer with one lighter layer underneath.
