Robots can go to work after reading a human face

Robots that react to people showing various facial expressions and others that carry heavy equipment will be among innovations on show at the spring edition of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair and the International ICT Expo at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai next month.

The robot with an eye for expressions and capable of picking up emotions and reacting accordingly thanks to artificial intelligence power is known as Gomer. It also has soft hands - clamps, really - to take hold of variously shaped objects.

With live video and two-way audio functions Gomer can also patrol a home. Another robot, Follow Me, can carry heavy or bulky objects while tagging along behind an operator.

"Platooning technology" also allows several robots to work with each other. So a Follow Me team can combine for a task.

Other technologies include an intelligent gym bike, bicit, which has a dedicated app so users can control it remotely and record progress. Also on display is OpenVR.shop. That allows retailers to show physical stores to customers via virtual reality.

Once again the fair will feature the Tech Hall of four zones - Connected Home, Robotics & Unmanned Tech, Virtual Reality and Wearable Electronics.

Some 4,900 exhibitors from around the world will show products and technologies at the HKCEC from April 13 to 16.
