SAYREVILLE – The state Department of Transportation is proposing extensive changes to the intersection of Route 9 and Bordentown Avenue to improve safety and traffic flow.

The DOT will hold a public information session on the project 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24 at the municipal building, 167 Main St. The project's preliminary engineering and final design are scheduled for 2020-2023.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2023.

Bordentown Avenue flows under Route 9. However, the ramps between Bordentown Avenue and Route 9 involve Eugene Boulevard on the east side and Burlew Place and Kenneth Avenue on the west side. Those ramps do not have traffic signals.

The Sayreville Borough Engineer's Office had submitted a statement to the DOT saying that the conflicting traffic flow at the unsignalized intersections along Bordentown Avenue have resulted in numerous crashes.

To improve safety, the DOT is proposing several changes:

  • A roundabout is proposed at the intersection of Bordentown Avenue and Kenneth Avenue.
  • Burlew Place will be slightly realigned to intersect with Bordentown Avenue just west of the proposed roundabout.
  • A new ramp is proposed from southbound Route 9 to westbound Bordentown Avenue.
  • Another roundabout is proposed at the Bordentown Avenue intersection with Eugene Boulevard.
  • New deceleration lanes are proposed for the southbound northbound Route 9 off-ramps.
  • An acceleration lane is proposed on southbound Route 9 at the Bordentown Avenue ramp.
  • An outside shoulder is proposed along northbound Route 9 between Bordentown Avenue and the Garden State Parkway to improve access to businesses.

At the public information sessions, attendees will have a chance to look at maps of project, ask questions and discuss any concerns with DOT officials.
