Pianist Played At Church And At Memorial Hospital As A Volunteer

Carol Elizabeth Johnson Spurgeon Keeney, 69, a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on June 25, 2020. 

Carol was born in El Paso, Tx., to the late Carroll W. and Juanita Johnson, but was a lifelong resident of Harrison, Tn. She became a member of Greenwood Baptist Church at age 12.  She played the accordion, the organ, and the piano in church, learning them at an early age.  Carol was also a piano player for Lakeway Baptist Church, where she was also a member.  She played music as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital in their ministry.  Carol was a graduate of Ooltewah High School and attended Chattanooga State, where she obtained a degree in early childhood education.  She worked several years for McKee Bakery.  Carol was also a Junior Red Cross volunteer, part of Friends of the Festival at Riverbend, past Worthy Advisor for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, past Royal Matron in the Order of the Amaranth, past High Priestess of the Lady Shriners, member of the Daughters of the Nile, the Eastern Star #365, and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

She was preceded in death by her father, Carroll Warner Johnson.

Carol is survived by her husband, Mark Dean Keeney; mother, Juanita Elizabeth Johnson; children, Lloyd Gene (Shannon) Spurgeon, Jr., Timothy  Ray Spurgeon, William Mark (Debra) Keeney, Tonya Elizabeth Appugliese; twelve grandchildren, Heather Nicole (Hershel) Cooper, Kaitlin (Bronson) Pierce, Gabriel, Noah and Harrison Spurgeon, Cameron Chase (Grace) Spurgeon, Sky Bleau and Savannah Spurgeon, Taylor and Terra Keeney, Tristin Weiss and Gabriella Appugliese; three great-grandchildren, McKinley Grace and Dallas Wayne Cooper and Thaddeus Beau Spurgeon.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Cameron Chase, Sky Bleau, Harrison Ray, Gabriel and Noah Spurgeon, Hershel Cooper, Nicholas Townsend.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 2, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home at Highway 58. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Turner Funeral Home chapel with Reverend David Ferguson and Reverend Steve Moore officiating.

Carol will be laid to rest in Old McDonald Cemetery with a white dove release.
