Why UL-Monroe after being in the Power Five since 1999? Well, he and UL-Monroe head coach Terry Bowden have several connections, and his son, Rhett, will be transferring in from Arizona as a grad transfer.

Rodriguez and Bowden both played at West Virginia, but three years apart (Rodriguez 1981-1984, Bowden 1977-78) and both had their 2nd coaching job at Salem University, a Division-II school in Salem, WV. Not to mention, Rodriguez was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Clemson from 1999-2000 under Terry Bowden's brother, Tommy, prior to becoming the head coach at West Virginia in 2001. The Tigers went 15-6 in the two years Rodriguez was on staff and lost the Peach Bowl to Mississippi State 17-7 and lost in the Gator Bowl to Virginia Tech 41-20.

The Warhawks finished the 2020 season with an 0-10 record including a loss to former West Virginia Offensive Coordinator Texas State, who is now the head coach at Texas State. The ULM offense averaged just 16.7 points and 305.7 yards per game, meaning that Rodriguez and Bowden are going to have quite a challenge turning this program around.
