SAN DIEGO, CA — The U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector rescued a man who was diabetic and medically distressed from the heat while crossing the border illegally last weekend, the agency said Friday in a press release.

Agents responded to the man’s distress call around 3:45 p.m. Sunday. The 46-year-old man could no longer walk when agents found him. He was without water and required medical attention, as temperatures reached roughly 104 degrees.

Agents from Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations were conducting aerial operations and located the distressed individual. The helicopter guided border patrol agents on the ground to the man’s location, and the agents hiked nearly a mile through the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area to provide aid.

The agents evaluated the immobilized man, then requested assistance from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Aerial Support to Regional Enforcement Agencies unit to extract him. The man was flown to a nearby California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection station, where he was treated by paramedics.

After paramedics deemed no further medical attention was required, agents questioned the man regarding his citizenship. The man was a Mexican national illegally present in the U.S. He was taken to a nearby border patrol station for processing.
