CHENNAI: The action-packed ICC cricket World Cup may have concluded on Sunday with England winning their maiden ODI World cup. But if the quadrennial showpiece were to be held on the most favoured social media platform - Twitter - then India would have clinched the contest hands down. The official handles of the World Cup - @cricketworldcup and @icc went on to garner over 60 million views as per a statement released by Twitter India.
If that wasn’t enough, the hashtag #CWC19 went on to generate a whopping 31 million tweets during the period between May 20 and July 15.
What’s interesting to note is that if one compared #CWC19 to the World Cup hashtag #CWC15 which was used to tweet during the last edition held Down Under, the growth has been well over 100%.
What was most fascinating to note is that the most adored tweets during the #CWC19 were the ones involving Indian skipper Virat Kohli where he thanked the fans for their unending support and his sweet gesture of meeting his 87-year-old fan Charulata Patel.
Not surprisingly, the most tweeted contest proved to be the #INDvsPAK which saw over 2.9 million tweets. The second most-Tweeted was the final between #ENGvNZ followed by the first semi-final #INDvNZ.
While India remained the most Tweeted about team in #CWC19, its wicketkeeper and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (@msdhoni) proved to be the most tweeted about player. Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) not only proved his mettle with the willow in the middle, he was also the most tweeted about captain.
