Fairfax County Coronavirus Testing Events Close Early
ANNANDALE, VA — Two free drive-thru and walk-up coronavirus testing events in Fairfax County closed early due to large turnouts Saturday and Sunday.
The Saturday event at Annandale High School and Sunday event at Bailey's Elementary School were scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The health department tweeted around 12:30 p.m. Saturday that the event reached capacity. The Bailey's Crossroads event reached capacity before noon Sunday.
The events are coordinated by the Fairfax County Department of Health and Virginia Department of Health. Recent testing events in Prince William County and Loudoun County also reached capacity early.
Fairfax County Health Department spokesperson Tina Dale told Patch the testing goal for each day is 1,000. However, the number of people tested Saturday was higher, and extra supplies were on hand for Sunday's event.
The free testing events are aimed at addressing community spread in the Annandale and Bailey's Crossroads communities. The 22041 ZIP code covering Bailey's Crossroads and part of Lake Barcroft and 22003 ZIP code covering Annandale have some of the highest rates of cases in Fairfax County. The testing events do not require a doctor referral, appointment, or insurance and are open to anyone age 2 and up. Spanish speakers will be available at the sites.
Dale said the health department is working with the Virginia Department of Health for future testing sites. Two other community testing events are planned Monday at Alexandria's Landmark Mall and Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
