New York is working to meet an early goal in its effort to get as many people vaccinated for COVID-19 as possible.

According to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, all nursing home residents in the state should have gotten, or been offered at least one dose of the vaccine by the end of the weekend.

Officials at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Commack told News 12 that just about every resident who's willing, and physically able to get the shot had received it, with about 80% compliance among residents. Administrators at Nassau Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hempstead say most of the people in their care have also been vaccinated.

But even though most residents have already been vaccinated, both nursing homes say far fewer staff members have been willing to roll up their sleeves.

At Nassau, that number is about 50%-- and at Gurwin it's closer to 40%. But more workers have recently become willing to take the vaccine.

"There was some hesitation and there was some skepticism. But as we work to educate the staff as well as the residents, those feelings are dissipating," says Oded Dashiff, with Nassau Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

New York State is part of a federal program to vaccinate nursing home residents, working with major pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens.
