What you need to know: Flour Bluff scored on big plays time and again against Brownsville Pace in the Hornets bi-district playoff win. It was the fifth consecutive season the Hornets had won a playoff game. Quarterback Nash Villegas' role in the rushing attack continued to expand. The 6-foot-5 signal caller topped 100 yards on the ground, including a 47-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter. Villegas added 188 yards and three touchdowns passing. Jose Martinez (97 yards, one TD), Isaac Miles (88 yards, two TDs) and Mathew Martinez (36 yards, one TD) helped Flour Bluff amass 328 yards rushing. Southside is officially 9-1, but four games were forfeited due to COVID-19, including the Cardinals' lone loss. On the field Southside is 6-0. The Cardinals are 2-9 all-time in the postseason. Quarterback Richie Torres leads a Southside offense averaging 29 points a game. The Cardinals defense has held teams to 50 points in six games, including two shutouts. The teams have one common opponent: Rockport-Fulton. The Hornets beat the Pirates 24-0 and Southside earned a 14-7 win. The winner faces Victoria West or San Antonio Southwest in the Class 5A Division I regional semifinals.
