Community meeting to discuss the future of drones and upcoming drone tests

Drone
NASA, TAMU-CC to conduct urban drone tests

The community is invited to gather Saturday to learn about the future of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (commonly known as drones) and to ask questions about the upcoming test event happening in downtown Corpus Christi later this Summer.

The Lone Star UAS Center for Excellence & Innovation at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will host the meeting from 10:30 a.m. to Noon in the University Center, Lonestar Ballroom.

This test event is the culmination of a five-year effort by NASA to develop and test for the creation of an Urban Traffic Management (UTM) system using UAS technology. By combining the complex technologies of UTM hardware and software, developers are hoping to ensure safety by avoiding collisions and landing among existing structures and modes of transportation present in cities.

The test event is planned to take place in four to six-hour blocks of time over the span of five days, with the possibility of a few extra days being needed.

As the next round of major NASA UAS testing is slated to take place in Los Angeles and Dallas/Ft. Worth, these tests position Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the city of Corpus Christi, and the state of Texas as leading the way in economic development and innovation for UAS technologies.

A&M-Corpus Christi is partnering with the City of Corpus Christi, the Downtown Management District, the Port of Corpus Christi, and several other community and corporate entities for this event.

Communitea hosts a Full Moon Drum Circle this Saturday

Welcome the "Full Buck moon" with a drum circle.

According to NASA,in July, the full moon is nicknamed "Buck Moon" or "Thunder moon" because of reasons associated with Native American tribes.

"According to this almanac, as the full Moon in July and the first full Moon of Summer, the Algonquin tribes in what is now the Eastern USA called this full Moon the Buck Moon," NASA's website says, "Early Summer is normally when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. They also called this the Thunder Moon because of early Summer's frequent thunderstorms."

Communitea has invited everyone to join them in celebrating July's Buck moon with a drum circle.

The drum circle will be led by Elizabeth Pena this Saturday from 7 pm to 10 pm at Communitea.

"Join Elizabeth Pena in hosting this month's Full Moon with a drum circle where you meet with your community to drum, dance and cleanse the old and invite the new," their event page says.

Communitea has asked for people to bring firewood if they have it.

A rally to protest migrant camps on the US/Mexico border is going on here this Saturday.

The Trump administration has been under fire for policies that are deeply affecting migrant families at the border. A group of local activists have decided to respond with peaceful protests to raise awareness for the issue locally. They are part of a recent nationwide movement against the mistreatment of migrant families being detained in camps at the border.

The "Close the Camps" rally starts at 11 am at Cole Park, and will last until 2 pm. Event organizers remind everyone that this is a non-partisan event and ask that people bring signs, chairs, and to dress according to the weather.

The timing of the rally happens to coincide with Vice President Mike Pence's visit to a detention center in McAllen, Texas. It also comes after the Office of the Inspector General released a reportdescribing conditions at a federal detention center in the Rio Grande Valley as, "a ticking time bomb."
