UPDATE—August 4, 2021: With just over half the country fully vaccinated, indoor dining open, and travel picking up, we thought we could put the days of mask wearing (for the most part) behind us. But due to the delta variant’s driving coronavirus cases upward, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its guidelines to urge even fully vaccinated people to wear masks indoors in public settings with “substantial or high transmission.” The updated guidance comes ahead of the fall season, when schools are scheduled to reopen and many large companies plan to bring employees back to the office on a full or hybrid schedule.

So what exactly does this mean for you? Well, with more transmissible variants spreading globally, it’s vital that we take every possible step to slow the spread, and making sure we stay masked up indoors could be one way to do just that—especially if you’re not vaccinated yet. Start by stocking up on new cloth face masks below, then consider going the extra mile by also having a few disposable masks on hand.

ORIGINAL STORY—August 13, 2020: Practicing social distancing is the best thing you can do to slow the spread of COVID-19, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises you to wear a cloth face covering in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, like protests, grocery stores, and pharmacies—especially with virus cases on the rise in states across the nation. With this recommendation, everyone wants to know where to buy face masks. We rounded up some options below—including face masks for kids, breathable face masks, face masks for glasses, and the best face masks on Amazon and Etsy—and we’ll update this list as companies go in and out of stock.

Cloth face masks don’t guarantee you won’t contract the virus or pass it on, but they’re a public health measure we should all take seriously, whether your city is slowly reopening or experiencing a new wave of cases. If you’re unsure of where to buy face masks for yourself or your family, shop the brands below. While you wait for your order to arrive, you can make your own mask out of a pillowcase, dishcloth, or bandana because even a makeshift mask is a vital step to help protect yourself and your community.

CandyCare Disposable Face Mask (25-Pack)

“I spent eight years as a volunteer EMT in D.C., Maryland, and North Carolina. I’ve worn a lot of PPE. Is this the best mask I’ve worn? No, N95 masks will always take that title, but for a non-N95 mask this is pretty fantastic. The material is thick enough that I’m not worried about it ripping. It has a heavy-enough cloth element to stop the filter composition from getting soft while I breathe. It has a wire in the top section to allow a tighter clamp around my nose, creating a safer seal. The ear loops are both comfortable and tight enough to make the mask secure. This is a damn good mask, especially for the price (so good to see a company not price-gouging masks right now).” David
