Coronavirus: New COVID-19 deaths in Duval, Putnam counties

Duval County reported two new deaths and Putnam County listed one in the Florida Department of Health’s Sunday report on the coronavirus pandemic.

In Duval County, the state listed the death of a 90-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman. The death in Putnam County was listed as a 63-year-old man, the sixth to die in the county.

Those were three of four new deaths recorded statewide, raising the cumulative COVID-19 death toll to 94 for Northeast Florida and to 2,451 for the state. Duval County has now reported 50 deaths to date from the coronavirus.

The statistics reflect a continued pattern of lower fatality reports from the health department on Sundays. In each of the last four Sundays, the number of new deaths compared to the previous day’s report has remained in the single digits.

Northeast Florida added 45 new cases — 36 in Duval County, four in St. Johns County, two each in Clay County and Putnam County, one in Nassau County and none in Baker County — to raise the region’s cumulative total to 2,543 positive tests.

Statewide hospitalization numbers increased by 77 to 10,190, the fewest new hospitalizations since May 26.

In its Sunday report, the department reported 56,163 cases in the state, 739 more than reported 24 hours earlier.

The numbers from the state have not always been consistent. Discrepancies include an unexplained decrease in cumulative cases for two counties earlier in May.

In addition, the state’s online dashboard went offline Sunday, displaying a request to sign in instead of Florida coronavirus statistics. The health department cited a “glitch” and said it was working to restore service.
