WHITHARRAL, TX (KCBD) - The Whitharral Panthers enter 2018 with a new head coach as assistant Austin Flores takes over for Clayton Fryar.

Whitharral went 5-8 last season, but went 5-2 down the stretch, winning a bi-district playoff game in stunning fashion. Despite being 45-point underdogs, the Panthers dominated the Matadors 70-38. It's a win that carries over to this year's squad.

"I think it built a lot of confidence with our kids. We lost four seniors, but we are bringing back quite a bit. It gives them confidence they can beat a program that has a lot of winning and tradition and we can start building our own tradition again."

The Panthers are in the five-team District 3 of Class 1A Division 2 with Anton, Amherst, Cotton Center and Lazbuddie.

"It's gonna be tough. We are five good team that will battle it out very well. We always have hopes of winning District. We hope to get to the playoffs. Our region is one that could benefit us if we can make it out."
