After The Whistle: Decatur’s Evan Truitt
SALISBURY, Md. – The Decatur Seahawks fell just short of a sectional title in 2019. Now, right-handed pitcher Evan Truitt is using that disappointing loss to Bennett as fuel for his fire.
“We were in the lead in the last inning, and I was pitching, and then I missed a ground ball, and the inning kind of fell apart. So I have a lot on my shoulders to try and redeem myself after that.”
The junior says if he finds himself in that situation again, he’ll be ready.
“This year I’ll definitely be able to make that play.”
But that one play doesn’t overshadow the coming out party that was Truitt’s Sophomore season. The 6-foot 170 pound right-hander gained more confidence as the year went on, closing out games, and earning second team all-Bayside honors.
“After getting a couple of outings on the mound and showing the coaches what I could do, I started proving myself more, and they really trusted me to go out and get outs.”
After adding 13 pounds to his frame in the offseason, Evan hopes that this can be another tool in the arsenal to help with his continued domination in the Bayside.
“I’d like the team to go farther than last year, losing in the sectional final. And I’d like to possibly make first team, and just really dominate this season.”
Truitt features a fastball in the upper 80s, a changeup he considers his best pitch, and a 12-6 curveball. He says he hopes to touch the low 90s and continue to open the eyes of scouts.
But the most important goal is coming back strong, getting revenge for their loss to rival Bennett, and continue to win with the same teammates he has had since his days in Berlin Little League.
“It’s just gonna be we’re all bonded close together, we don’t have anything to build. We’re just gonna be all close friends and having a good time playing.”
