Hugh Jackman, Regina King and Laverne Cox are among the Hollywood stars set to appear at Dorians TV Toast, a virtual event presented by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, on Sept. 13.
Hosted by talk radio personality Karel, the two-hour event will include awards given to mainstream and LGBTQ-themed content, chosen by the organization’s 270 members of entertainment journalists and critics from diverse backgrounds.
“It’s really incredible how the industry has so positively responded to our show,” said Karel in a statement. “While COVID has definitely created challenges, it’s also strangely brought us together in a global way: We’ve got Alex Newell in Canada, Laverne Cox in New York, Lea DeLaria in LA, Margaret Cho in her back yard and even a surprise from Ireland! A pub is a place that brings people together, and we think Oscar Wilde would approve of our virtual Plan B.”
Janelle Monae, John Oliver, Damon Lindelof, Billy Porter and Dan Levy, whose sitcom Schitt’s Creek received seven nominations, are also among the attendees.
Ryan Murphy’s drama series Hollywood follows closely behind Schitt’s Creek with six nods. Among the films, Bad Education — starring Jackman as Frank Tassone, a school superintendent who embezzled a large sum of money in 2004 — is up for best TV movie or limited series, alongside the historical drama Mrs. America.
GALECA executive director John Griffiths said in a statement, “With September being Suicide Prevention Month and next month being LGBTQ History Month, this is a lovely and loving time to celebrate not just great television, but also how ‘rainbow’ journalists’ have boosted Hollywood from day one.”
He continued, “Be they black, Latinx, indigenous, white, bi, trans, nonbinary or several of the above, queer entertainment critics and reporters have a distinct perspective born of their culture and oppression that has shaped all of the arts for the better.”
The show will be broadcast on streaming network Revry, which focuses on queer content and creators. “We believe that representation saves lives and while our network focuses on uplifting LGBTQ+ entertainment within queer culture, GALECA has been essential in pushing the broader entertainment industry towards increased representation of LGBTQ+ people in mainstream media,” said Christopher J. Rodriguez, co-founder of Revry, in a statement.
Nonprofit organization GALECA was founded in 2009 to explore and celebrate diverse content. Dorians TV Toast airs Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. PT.
