Parolee Wanted For Using Fake Money To Buy iPhone: Cops

Parolee arranged to buy an iPhone over the letgo app and handed over $1,000 in fake cash to seller, Alsip police said.

ALSIP, IL -- Alsip police are looking for a Chicago man, who allegedly set up a deal buy an iPhone using an online app and then paid the seller with fake cash. An arrest warrant was issued for Kahari Crockett, 23, for theft. Crockett is currently on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The detective told the judge that the seller started texting Crockett on Oct. 24, using the app letgo, which allows users to buy and sell used stuff. Crockett responded to an ad regarding an iPhone that was for sale. The buyer and seller agreed to met at Walgreens at 12290 S. Pulaski Road in Alsip.

Crockett allegedly handed over $1,000 cash and grabbed the iPhone from the seller. The seller immediately noticed that the money was fake, by Crockett had already taken off with the phone, the detective said.

According to IDOC records, Crockett was serving a seven-year sentence stemming from a 2015 armed robbery conviction. Crockett is also on parole where he had been serving two concurrent, three-year sentences for burglary in 2013.

The judge issued a $250,000 warrant for Crockett’s arrest.
