A National CASC supported project to analyze creel program data is accepting applications for a research assistantship position in Louisiana State University’s (LSU) Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences (DOCS) that will start in spring 2021.

Position Title: Postdoctoral Researcher for recreational angling project

Location:

LSU College of the Coast & Environment, Oceanography & Coastal Sciences

Project Background: For fishery managers to appropriately plan and prepare for future changes in climate conditions and water resources, they need accurate baseline information about current and changing fish populations. Fish removals by anglers represent an important source of mortality data when trying to understand fish populations, and this information is even more important when the fishery is dominated by recreational and subsistence fishing. Despite the importance of recreational harvest, regional summarizations are very challenging to implement given the extreme diversity in state and local fishing regulations, along with differences and dynamics of all the fisheries throughout the U.S. The goal of this project is to work with state natural resource agencies across the Southeastern U.S. to use data from individual creel programs and standardize as much of the methods and data as possible, in order to generate a regional estimate of recreational catch and harvest. This is a great opportunity to contribute to improving recreational fishing data availability, learn about a wide diversity of fisheries, and expand your fisheries professional network regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Responsibilities: A research assistantship is available in Louisiana State University’s (LSU) Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences (DOCS) starting spring 2021 for project funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Climate Adaptation Science Center (NCASC). The successful applicant will work with a nationwide recreational creel database (USGS’s CreelCat) to develop models for estimating harvest of freshwater fishes in the Southeast US. Research themes will be in recreational harvest estimation, hierarchical models, and big data. Scope exists to develop new questions and analyses based on their relevance to the project. Remote work is possible to start the project.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. degree in Fisheries Science, Aquatic Ecology, or similar

• Experience in R (and JAGS) and quantitative skills are strongly desired

• Highly motivated and capable of working independently and collaboratively in diverse team environments

Salary: $45,000/year, plus benefits

Closing Date: The position will remain open until filled.
