Junior Corinne Zanolli added to her nation-leading goal total and senior Kelsey Bing was dynamic in goal, fueling No. 16 Stanford to a 2-0 America East field hockey victory over visiting California on Friday at the Varsity Turf.
Returning home for the first time in two weeks, Stanford (6-3, 1-0 America East) picked up a key conference victory in the West Division of the conference in a game that was televised on Pac-12 Network.
The Cardinal also continued its dominance of the Golden Bears, having now won 14 of the last 16 meetings dating to 2012.
Both of Zanolli’s goals came from second-half penalty corners, with Fenella Scutt providing both stick-stops after entry passes from Frances Carstens and Jessica Welch.
Following a breakthrough sophomore year in which she scored a single-season school-record 26 goals, Zanolli leads the country in goals (14) and points (30). Zanolli, who has scored 55 goals in 50 career games. She attempted a game-high five shots.
California (1-5, 0-1 America East) held a 13-10 shot advantage but was turned away at key moments from Bing, the U.S. national team member who made six saves in anchoring Stanford’s second shutout of the season.
Stanford hits the road again next week, visiting Wake Forest next Friday.
