Olivia O’Brien Breaks Down “hate u love u” On Genius’ Video Series ‘Verified’

Olivia O'Brien wrote her solo version of “hate u love u” two years ago in her bedroom. Rising rapper gnash added a verse, and the song became a hit as “i hate u, i love u,” topping the Genius charts and landing at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 this fall. But it was all inspired by 17-year-old O'Brien’s high school crush.

“Everyone at my school totally knew it was about him,” she tells Genius. “Him and the girl that he was dating would send me videos of them listening to it—it was some weird shit. For senior superlatives, he won ‘Most likely to have a song written about them.’”
