SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in the Bay Area to purchase a robot to improve accuracy and increase safety of minimally invasive spine surgeries, the hospital announced Tuesday.

The ExcelsiusGPS costs $1 million, Forbes reported, and can lead to smaller scars, shorter hospital stays, lower risk of infection, decreased radiation exposrue and less tissue damage, the medical center said in a press release.

“We are able to see and do more along the spine than ever before," said Dr. Hieu Ball, an orthopedic spine surgeon at the hospital, in the press release. "Patients undergoing spine surgery can have a whole new level of safety and peace of mind with their procedure.”
