How often are alfalfa crops replaced in the central valley? Every 2 or 3 years? What farmer would leave a crop in the ground when his costs of production exceeds his income just to recharge the water table? Are you flooding fallow fields since the rotation requirements seem to be high? Why is alfalfa so thirsty when it has roots that go 10-20 feet---this is about more profit for the growers/ more feed. This story does not feel like it is likely to be useful in the future of water conservation. Alfalfa is a thirsty crop and saving water in the winter, while helpful, will not be solved by alfalfa growers from what I can see.

Would flood-irrigated pasture ground be better for recharging?
