Mum splits her squabbling boys’ room in half using Ikea shelves – and now they’ve both got their own space

A SAVVY mum who didn't have the space to give her sons a room of their own has wowed people online by coming up with a genius DIY solution.

Mum-of-two Lauren Arlington needed space for her two growing lads, but the pair were too tall to fit in bunk beds.

Writing on the Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK, Laura explained: "A month ago we separated our boys room to give them their own space.

"My son is autistic and likes his own space. We did have bunk beds, but it became dangerous with him hiding sharp things and also he sleep walked an tried to throw himself off the bed a few times."

Her eldest son, who is 17, stands at an impressive 6ft 1, while her 10-year-old has autism and doesn't like being near the window.

As a solution, she got creative with the space and made the perfect room divider out of MDF and a shelving unit, creating privacy and storage for the two sons.

She continued: "We wanted them to have their own space, but also have storage."

She added to Fabulous: "We got a piece of MDF and using L brackets we fixed it to the top of the unit and the ceiling, so it was stable.

"We then decorated the MDF to match the wallpaper on the back. So they now have seperate sleeping areas.

"The cube unit is still usable for the top two lines and the bottom one they have a lamp, alarm clock and Alexa in."

Then Laura added wallpaper to the MDF and walls to make sure the room divider blended in.

She concluded: "In these pics we were waiting on [my son's] new bedding. He now has army grey camo which he chose. Very happy with the outcome, been a really good decision for them both."

Kallax units retail for £60, while a huge piece of MDF would have set Laura back around £24 from Wickes.
