GRAND HAVEN, MI – The Salvation Army of Grand Haven revealed the addition to its Corps Community Center at a public dedication Saturday, May 8.
The $2.2 million development adds 5,800 square feet to the building at 310 N. Despelder. It includes a new gymnasium, kitchen, bathrooms, office space and classrooms.
Major Heather Holman, a corps officer for the Salvation Army of Grand Haven, said the building expansion was envisioned 30 years by corps members.
“Expanding our current facility to add a gym was a need in our community and so after years of prayer and reaching out to those that would come alongside us, the dream began to take fruition,” Holman said in a statement.
The expansion broke ground Nov. 4, 2019 after three years of fundraising to meet a $1.1 million goal, but construction was delayed in the spring of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Salvation Army has served the Grand Haven community for 99 years, currently providing utility, rental and food assistance, emergency and transitional housing, summer programs for youth and back-to-school and Christmas assistance.
About 8,500 people utilize the organization’s services each year.
