Coronavirus Case Average, Hospitalizations Take Downturn In VA

The daily case average and current hospitalizations are still higher than numbers in previous months, according to VDH data.

VIRGINIA — On Sunday, Virginia recorded 3,792 new coronavirus cases while the seven-day average continues to decline from last week, according to Virginia Department of Health data.

The daily case average took a downturn after three days of record-high daily cases: 6,757 on Jan. 16, 9,914 on Jan. 17 and 7,245 on Jan. 18. The latest seven-day average of daily cases is 4,735, which is still higher than any average before January. Northern Virginia had 881 new cases on Sunday and has a seven-day average of 1,034 daily cases.

Current COVID-19 hospitalizations are also starting to decline after reaching new highs in the 3,000s in January. According to VDH, there are 2,846 current patients with confirmed or pending COVID-19 tests, including 546 in the intensive care units and 329 on ventilators. The statewide 2,846 current hospitalization total is still higher than any daily total before January. Ventilator use among all hospital patients stands at 35 percent, and intensive care unit occupancy is at 83 percent, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Virginia's positive average of tests has been on the decline after reaching 17 percent in early January. The latest seven-day average is 12.7 percent as of Jan. 20, and Northern Virginia's average is 11.7 percent. The seven-day average of total daily testing encounters is 31,002.

There were no new deaths reported on Sunday, and one was removed from the total. To date, deaths stand at 6,078, while cumulative cases stand at 472,447 and hospitalizations total 20,712.

As of Sunday, 416,200 people in Virginia have received at least the first COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 58,779 people are fully vaccinated. There have been 1,055,975 doses distributed to date in Virginia. Hospitals have administered 231,888 doses, while local health departments have given 116,515 doses.

Northern Virginia health districts and others are allowing individuals eligible in phases 1a and 1b to receive vaccinations. However, due to limited doses, some eligible residents face wait times before appointments become available.

  • Fairfax County: 56,475 cases, 3,202 hospitalizations, 752 deaths; increase of 336 cases and 12 hospitalizations, one death removed
  • Fairfax City: 391 cases, 27 hospitalizations and one death
  • Falls Church: 262 cases, 18 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of four cases
  • Loudoun County: 18,381 cases, 723 hospitalizations, 171 deaths; increase of 230 cases
  • Manassas: 3,529 cases, 153 hospitalizations, 32 deaths; increase of 13 cases and one hospitalization
  • Manassas Park: 1,057 cases, 66 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of one case
