JetBlue and American’s new partnership gives Boston travelers more choices

The airlines formed a Northeast Alliance.

JetBlue and American Airlines just launched a new partnership that will bring more flight options to passengers in Boston and New York.

The first phase of their new Northeast Alliance will bring customers of the two airlines more competitive choices in the two cities, according to JetBlue, through nearly 80 codeshare flights, new routes, expanded schedules, and reciprocal benefits through rewards programs.

JetBlue is Logan International Airport‘s largest carrier.

“Our alliance with American opens the door for JetBlue to successfully enter into new markets, introducing more choices and our award-winning service and low fares to more customers,” said Scott Laurence, head of revenue and planning for JetBlue, in a statement. “The alliance is also essential to getting our planes back in the air profitably and crewmembers working again.”

Codesharing allows travelers to book directly with their preferred airline for flights operated by a partner airline. JetBlue customers now have access to more than 25 routes on American and American customers have access to 49 routes on JetBlue. Codeshare flights are currently available to and from Logan Airport, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, and New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport.

The airlines are increasing flight frequencies on key routes at those airports this spring.

In April, JetBlue will offer more than six daily flights and American will offer up to three daily flights between New York and Boston, providing customers with every other hour service. JetBlue will offer up to four daily flights and American will offer up to seven daily flights from Boston to Washington, D.C., which means close to hourly service for customers. JetBlue will also offer up to 14 daily flights and American will offer up to eight daily flights from Boston to the following airports in Florida: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Miami International Airport, and Palm Beach International Airport.

“Additional daily departures will be added in these markets during peak summer travel periods and beyond, further improving options for travelers,” according to JetBlue.

This summer, JetBlue and American will add additional flights between Boston and Los Angeles and Boston and Chicago, according to JetBlue. Also, JetBlue’s winter seasonal service from Boston to Key West International Airport will expand to year-round service.

The carriers have also announced more than 30 new routes, some of which bring more choices to Massachusetts travelers.

American is launching the following new domestic routes at Logan, most of which are seasonal: Columbus, Ohio beginning Aug. 17; Asheville, N.C. (June 5 to Nov. 6); Jackson Hole, Wyo. (June 5 to Sept. 4); Traverse City, Mich. (June 5 to Sept. 6); and Wilmington, N.C. (June 5 to Aug. 14). JetBlue will launch more than a dozen new routes from New York on July 1, including summer seasonal service between Newark and Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard as well as LaGuardia and Martha’s Vineyard.

More Northeast markets will be added through the first half of the year, American noted.
