2-year-old child wounds mother in accidental shooting in Hendricks County

Update:

The Hendrick's County Sheriff's Office determined the 2-year-old boy found a loaded handgun in his parents' bedroom and used it to shoot his mother in the chest. As of Dec. 4, the mother is recovering. No criminal charges will be filed.

A woman was seriously injured after being accidentally shot by her 2-year-old son in Hendricks County, police said.

The toddler found a semi-automatic pistol and shot his mother about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday in the family's home in the 6400 block of West U.S. 36 Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Amanda Goings said.

The home is located near New Winchester, close to the Putnam County line.

The shooting appears to be an accident, Goings said.

The 40-year-old woman was taken to an Indianapolis hospital in serious condition, where she remained in stable condition, Goings said.

A 5-year-old sibling was in the home and called for help, Goings said. Neither child was injured.

Child Protective Services and Hendricks County detectives were investigating, Goings said.
