The little town of Tortilla Flat (population 6) started out as an easy place for gold prospectors to camp as they made their way into the Superstition Mountains. Today, after a succession of owners, additions, and improvements, the town thrives as an "Old West" tourist attraction. A permanent settlement didn't crop up until around 1904, but you'd never know it. Learn the town's history at a diminutive museum in the former schoolhouse, have Killer Chili and a cold beer or lemonade at the saloon, and browse through the general store. Even better, combine a stop in Tortilla Flat with a hike in the mountains – several trailheads are in the vicinity. Live music is a daily perk, 10am till 4pm.
