North Central 10, Warren Central 0

For the first time in 21 years – or well before any of the North Central football players were even born – the Panthers knocked off rival Warren Central.

North Central used a dominant defensive effort to outlast the Warriors 10-0 on Friday night in a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference matchup between two top 10-ranked teams in Class 6A.

The win snapped a 32-game losing streak against Warren Central. The last time North Central win against the Warriors came on Oct. 29, 1999 – a 17-10 OT victory in sectionals. Fifth-ranked North Central improves to 1-0 in the MIC and 3-0 overall, while the No. 8 Warriors drop to 0-2.

FOR SUBSCRIBERS:NC ends 32-game losing streak to Warren Central in style with Paul Loggan-inspired reds

Both of North Central’s scores came off of turnovers that put the Panthers’ inside the Warriors’ 15.

Early in the second quarter, North Central senior defensive back Larry Campbell picked off Warren Central QB Prince Powell and took the ball to the 5-yard line. A negative play and a NC penalty later, Panthers’ senior quarterback Zayd Vestal hooked up with senior Northwestern commit Theran Johnson for a 15-yard TD – the game’s only first-half points.

Warren Central drove to the Panthers’ 9-yard line late in the final minutes of the first half, but couldn’t convert on a 37-yard field goal attempt.

The Panthers added the insurance they needed on a 28-yard field goal by kicker Max McQuistion.

The Warriors haven’t scored a point in their first two games. The Panthers recorded six sacks and three turnovers against Warren Central. — Tom Moor

Center Grove 42, Carmel 0

GREENWOOD – It was more mismatch than rematch.

In a reprise of last year’s Class 6A state championship game, Carson Steele ran for three touchdowns as No. 1 Center Grove overpowered No. 6 Carmel 42-0 Friday night.

It was the first time since the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference was formed in 1996 that Center Grove has shut out successive MIC opponents. The Trojans (3-0) beat Warren Central 20-0 a week ago.

The Greyhounds (1-2) never turned the ball over but never reached midfield. They were held without a first down in the second half and totaled 143 yards of offense.  Warren Central managed 58 yards against Center Grove.

Carmel beat Center Grove 20-17 for the 2019 state championship.

FOR SUBSCRIBERS:Playing against No. 1 Center Grove isn't any fun. Just ask Carmel.

DOYEL:This season is far from normal, but you can always count on community spirit

Center Grove featured two 100-yard rushers: Steele, 21 carries for 133 yards, and Daniel Weems, 19 carries for 104 yards. Quarterback Tayven Jackson was 9-of-15 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Trojans blew it open with a 21-point fourth quarter, capped by a 30-yard TD run by sophomore Drew Wheat with a minute left. They totaled 322 rushing yards on 52 attempts.

Carmel had a chance to cut into Center Grove’s 14-0 lead in the first half when Colton Parker made a spectacular one-handed catch along the sideline on third-and-10 for a 28-yard gain to the 40. The Greyhounds then gained two yards on three plays and had to punt.

Bishop Chatard 28, Roncalli 7

Class 3A top-ranked Bishop Chatard was dominant on defense, limiting Class 4A ninth-ranked Roncalli 200 yards of total offense and intercepting two passes in a 28-7 victory on Friday night.

Chatard (3-0) took control in the final two minutes of the second half. The Trojans, leading 13-7, stopped Roncalli on a fourth-down play deep in Chatard territory. Quarterback Carter St. John hit Brady Kinnett for a 43-yard pass to the Roncalli 15 and, two plays later, connected with Ryan McGinnis with a 13-yard touchdown pass to give Chatard a 21-7 lead with 25 seconds left in the half.

FOR SUBSCRIBERS:If this Bishop Chatard team is a 'work in progress' then make room in the trophy case

St. John was 9-for-13 passing for 174 yards and three touchdowns to lead Chatard. Tommy Hannon rushed for 90 yards and 11 carries, including a 58-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Matthew Coons added 58 rushing yards on 17 carries for the Trojans, who had 339 yards of total offense.

Baron Huebler rushed for 110 yards on 27 carries to lead Roncalli.

Chatard got off to a fast start after Kyle Haslett intercepted a pass in the flat from Aidan Leffler and returned it to the Roncalli 3-yard-line. Three plays later, Carter St. John found Ryan McGinnis for a 7-yard touchdown pass to give Chatard a 7-0 lead barely two minutes into the game.

Roncalli quickly answered, speeding the tempo after Ryan Henry returned the kickoff to the Roncalli 41. Roncalli covered 59 yards in eight plays as Leffler scored on a 1-yard sneak after his 19-yard pass to Cole Beckman put Roncalli on the doorstep. It was a 7-7 game midway through the first quarter.

The score stayed there until St. John went over the top on third-and-11 and found a wide-open Thomas Coleman for a 51-yard touchdown pass to give the Trojans a 13-7 lead with 7:01 left in the first half.

Hamilton Southeastern 39,  Avon 28

AVON, Ind. – After building a substantial lead, Hamilton Southeastern avoided disaster with some late-game heroics on both sides of the ball for a 39-28 upset win over Class 6A No. 9 Avon in the teams’ Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener.

The Royals took a 25-0 lead before Avon scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Henry Hesson to Remington Gall as time expired.

FOR SUBSCRIBERS:Avon erases 25-0 deficit, but HSE delivers eventual knockout punch in thriller

That connection continued in the second half, with Hesson and Gall connecting on 6- and 26-yard scores. Hesson added a 26-yard TD toss to wideout Joe Hall midway through the fourth quarter to give Avon a 28-25 lead.

Hamilton Southeastern (2-1, 1-0) didn’t relent, though, marching downfield with junior tailback Blaine Wertz helping them move back ahead 32-28 after a 4-yard scoring run with 3 minutes left.

After Hamilton Southeastern’s defense forced a four-and-out on the next possession by Avon (1-2, 0-1) behind a pair of Evan Sherrill sacks, HSE quarterback John McCall sealed the win with a 4-yard scoring run with 1:37 left.

Wertz finished with 124 yards rushing on 23 carries for the Royals. — Paul Shepherd
