(WWLP) – Worcester Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern ran for his 13th term in office and succeeded Tuesday.

McGovern gained over 65.7 percent of the votes while his opponent Republican Tracy Lovvorn took 34.3 percent with 93 percent of precincts reporting.

22News spoke with McGovern as the results continue to come in.

“I’ve said throughout this campaign is that what matters most is not what we are against but what we are for. I have tried to emphasize a vision that is positive,” said McGovern. “That we are for bringing people together rather than tearing them apart. We are for love over hate, comprise vs. constantly fighting with each other.”

McGovern, who is the chairman of the House Rules Committee, is being challenged for re-election by Republican Tracy Lovvorn, a business owner from Grafton who ran unsuccessfully against McGovern two years ago.

The 2nd Congressional District is mostly in central Massachusetts, but it does include eastern portions of Franklin and Hampshire Counties, as well as a single precinct in Hampden County, located in the Bondsville section of Palmer.

It’s been busy at the Northampton Senior Center, not just Tuesday but since early voting started weeks ago.

“If you already voted that’s great, if you haven’t stressed it enough, just do it,” said Juliet Simon of Northampton.
