The Miami Hurricanes held their annual Junior Day, a recruiting event held each year around the time that the focus starts shifting to the following year’s class, at UM on Sunday.

By Sunday afternoon, the Hurricanes picked up a commitment from Miami Northwestern High outside linebacker prospect Ja’Corey Hammett.

“My Dad loved the Miami Hurricanes! It’s in my blood!,” Hammett posted in his Twitter announcement. “I am joining the U!”

Miami was second to offer Hammett, a member of the Class 5A state title-winning Northwestern Bulls as a junior this past fall. Tennessee was first on Hammett by a matter of hours on Jan. 18, according to Rivals.

Hammett, listed at 6 foot 3, 205 pounds, is not yet rated by Rivals and 247 Sports.

The addition brings UM’s 2021 recruiting class up to eight commitments — all from South Florida. Hammett joins Northwestern teammates in receiver Kahlil Brantley and cornerback Tim Burns Jr.

The Hurricanes also have commitments from a pair of Miami Central prospects in offensive lineman Laurence Seymore and outside linebacker Chamon Metayer, Miami Palmetto defensive tackle Savion Collins, Homestead South Dade edge rusher Tyler Johnson and Chaminade-Madonna kicker Andres Borregales, the younger brother of incoming transfer Jose Borregales from FIU.

National Signing Day for the 2020 class is on Feb. 5. Beyond the 18 recruits that signed during December’s Early Signing Period, UM has three additional commitments in its 2020 class.
