De Blasio escapes bad approval numbers in Maine

He’s got bad approval numbers, constant housing and transit crises and a deal with Amazon in peril — but when times are tough, Mayor de Blasio always has tiny Eastport, Maine.

He made his latest escape to the island town on Saturday to visit his aunt and give a fundraising speech.

It was at least his fifth trip there since he took office, part of a trend in which he spent 20 percent of his second term through early December out of town.

On Saturday, he was scheduled to visit his 92-year-old aunt Jean Wilhelm, who lives in Eastport, and give a speech to raise cash for an arts center.

That would mark his second year in a row helping out the Eastport Arts Center — raising the question of whether he might have his eye not on national office, but downsizing from NYC.

With a population of 1,300, compared to New York City’s more than 8 million, it would be far more manageable.

“Eastport is a nice, mellow place, unspoiled,” de Blasio told a Maine TV station last year. “I love it.”

And after years of complaining about being unappreciated here, Blas would know he has at least one fan on the island.

“He and I go off and do our things, and there are always these mysterious vehicles following us,” his aunt told the Portland Press-Herald. “It’s quite hilarious.”
