From boutiques to candy shops and art studios, Savannah has no shortage of homegrown talent and for many of those local establishments the holiday season is their time to shine with Small Business Saturday, which is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, kicking off the busiest time of year.

According to the annual Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, total reported spending among consumers who said they shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on the day reached a record high of an estimated $17.8 billion.

Locally, small businesses play a major role in Savannah’s economy and for the second year in a row the Savannah Morning News has compiled a list of made in Savannah items from shoes and candles to furniture and leather goods, sure to please everyone on your list this year while adding the uniqueness only Savannah can offer.

Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday is held each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and aims to encourage people to shop local. In 2011, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day, and officials in all 50 states participate.

According to the 2018 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey from American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business, 104 million shoppers across the country spent a record high of $17.8 billion during Small Business Saturday.
