The wife of Derek Chauvin, the fired Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd, was once charged with writing a bad $42 check.

Kellie Chauvin wrote the check in February 2005 prior to her marriage to the officer, the Daily Mail reported Friday. After months of letters attempting to collect the money, a criminal charge was filed against her in July of that year. The charge was dismissed after she paid back the money.

Derek Chauvin was one of the police officers who responded to a call from a grocery store on Monday that claimed Floyd had used a counterfeit $20 bill. In the ensuing arrest, video showed Derek Chauvin digging his knee into Floyd’s neck as another officer, Tou Thao, stood guard. Bystanders can be heard shouting at the officer to stop compressing Floyd’s neck as Floyd struggled to breathe, slowly falling unconscious. Floyd was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

After Derek Chauvin and three other officers were fired by the department, Chauvin was taken into custody and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.

The death of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, set off a wave of three-day protests that rocked the Twin Cities and resulted in burnt buildings, looted stores, and the destruction of a police precinct.
