Darien Sees Smaller Jump In Virus Cases

The number of coronavirus deaths remains the same in Darien.

DARIEN, IL — As of Sunday, Darien saw a 5 percent increase in coronavirus cases in the last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That's half of the previous week's jump of 10 percent.

The number of deaths from the coronavirus remains at six in Darien, as it has for weeks, the department says.

In DuPage County, Addison has the highest number of cases with 1,122, which works out to 30.8 per thousand. It is followed by West Chicago, with 1,062 cases, or 39.6 per thousand. Despite the high caseloads, both towns have seen relatively few deaths — 9 in Addison and 12 in West Chicago.

Darien's rate of increase of 5 percent was less than DuPage County as a whole, which saw its caseload rise by 6 percent in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.7 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Darien had 12.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 13.4 in La Grange Park, 14.2 in Western Springs, 15.3 in Elmhurst, 16.5 in Clarendon Hills, 16.6 in DuPage County, 19.1 in Hinsdale, 21.5 in Burr Ridge, 21.6 in suburban Cook County and 21.8 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Nationally, 6.2 million people have caught the virus, up 7 percent from the week before. A total of 188,513 people have died from the virus in the United States.
