A male was shot to death Saturday while riding his bicycle in Birmingham’s Titusville neighborhood.
Sgt. Rod Mauldin said 911 received a Shot Spotter call about 12:30 p.m. of five rounds fired on Center Street S.W. between First and Second avenues. When officers arrived in the neighborhood, they found the victim on the side of a house unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The victim, whose name and age has not been released, was on his bicycle when he was approached by the unknown suspect and some form of an altercation took place. Shots were then fired, and the suspect fled the scene.
The victim went a short distance away from the bike before collapsing.
“We believe there were several individuals who were out here that know something or saw something,’' Mauldin said. “This happened in broad daylight and we know there are several people who usually hang out in this area.”
“We know this is a well-trafficked area and somebody saw it,’' he said. “Our investigators are working around the clock and we are asking the community to assist and help us out.”
Investigators were canvassing the area for additional witnesses and possibly video surveillance footage.
Multiple family members were at the location Saturday afternoon, visibly upset.
The victim is Birmingham’s 53rd homicide so far this year. Of those, four have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 99 slayings, including the 53 in Birmingham.
