Kickoff 2020: May with big expectations; Big Country well-represented in six-man D-II
The Big Country usually has an impact on the six-man football picture, and 2020 should be no different. In Division I, May has hopes of a big season with a lot of experience back, while the usual suspects are chasing a title in Division II.
Blackwell and Strawn carried the six-man torch for the Big Country last year, each reaching the state semifinals. Who will own the show this season?
Class 1A Division II
It won't be an easy road for any of them, but the Big Country school with the best chance at reaching AT&T Stadium in Class 1A D-I could be May.
The Tigers went 10-2 last year, losing a 66-62 heartbreaker to Nueces Canyon in the second round. May has nine lettermen back, including five starters on each side of the ball.
Isidro Salinas, an All-Big Country defensive back, was the district defensive MVP and a first-team running back. Back with him are quarterback Blake Harrell and spreadback Rory Bustamante.
Chris Flenniken and Keith Cross are also expected to make an impact for the Tigers, who start the season ranked No. 7.
The challenge will be getting through a tough Region IV. No. 2 Jonesboro opens as the favorite, with young program Leakey also a threat. Leakey reached the state semifinals in 2018, its first season playing six-man football.
Baird is entering its first season of UIL competition and will be in May's district. The Bears went 8-2 last year playing an outlaw six-man schedule.
Running back/linebacker Cedar Cauble and quarterback/defensive back Nate Deel will be key for Baird, which should battle Gorman for the district's final playoff berth.
Ira is the only other Big Country team that made Texas Football's preseason rankings. The Bulldogs, coming off an 11-1 season, return only one starter — defensive back Cody McCowen. Still, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 10 and should take the district title.
Knox City must replace standout spreadback Abraham Nevarez, but the Greyhounds have All-Big Country receiver Anthony Hernandez back. It'll be a tough playoff race in district with Paducah and Spur.
Class 1A Division II
The Big Country usually makes its money at the D-II level. Strawn won the area's most recent state titles in 2017 and '18.
The Greyhounds reached the semifinals last year after beating rival Gordon in the playoffs. The Longhorns had won the district championship over Strawn. The Region III crown should come down to those two again.
Strawn starts the year ranked seventh, while Gordon follows at No. 8. The Greyhounds have five total returning starters, including all-state selections Luke Eli and Lorenzo Garcia.
The Longhorns have six starters back, led by running back Hoss Rouse. Quarterback Morgan Mahan is a threat as well.
Jayton had its title dreams dashed by Blackwell in 2019, but the Jaybirds should contend once again. Jayton has five starters back, including three on offense.
The Jaybirds are ranked fifth and will lean on running back Pecos Smith and tight end Tripp Scott. The team finished 12-1 after its semifinal loss to the Hornets. The first obstacle for Jayton will be in its own district. Matador Motley County, which reached the state championship, will battle the Jaybirds for the district title.
Blackwell, despite some key departures, is ready to build on its historic run. The 13 wins were the Hornets' most ever in a single season. But the team is replacing All-Big Country quarterback Michael Lowry.
Blackwell will lean on running back Cameron Coldiron, who doubles as a defensive lineman. Running back/defensive lineman Nathaniel Shipman will be key, too. Sam Brinkman steps in at quarterback.
District 15-1A D-II could be the Big Country's most interesting competition. Blanket and Brookesmith are both ranked and will grapple for the top spot.
The Tigers won last year's matchup 38-28. Blanket returns seven starters, including four defenders. Tight end/defensive end Tyler Simpson and running back/defensive back Hector Castaneda lead the way for No. 13 Blanket.
Brookesmith is still seeking its first district title since 1986 after narrowly falling to the Tigers. Half of the Mustangs' starters are back to try again, including Avery Williford and Johnathan Willoughby, who both play running back and linebacker.

Gordon Longhorns
Head coach: Mike Reed (15-9 in two seasons at Gordon, 156-55 overall)
Last year’s record: 11-2, 3-0 in district
Last district title/playoff appearance: 2019/2019
Enrollment: 50
Returning lettermen: 4
Returning off./def. starters: 3/3
Base offense: J-Bird
Base defense: 2-3-1
Team strength: Gordon has a good core of skilled athletes, and this is a program that’s used to winning. The Longhorns also have plenty of quickness and team speed.
Team weakness: Gordon has only one senior, and the Longhorns need some young, inexperienced players to step up – especially at the tight end and receiver spots, where the team lost two all-state players in Tyler White and Charles Moweles. “If we can mature as a team as we hit district, we can make a good push into the playoffs and have a real good season again,” Reed said.

Team strength: The Greyhounds return a good core of experienced players and should battle Gordon for not only for the district title, but the region title as well. This is a program with a knack for winning. The Greyhounds have reached at least the state semifinals the previous three years – winning state title sin 2017 and 2018.
Team weakness: Strawn must have some new, inexperienced players step up to be a state title contender.
