More than 50,000 people in Florida have now died of COVID-19, a somber milestone reached 540 days after the first death.

Florida reported its first COVID-19 death on March 24, 2020, and had logged 50,811 as of Wednesday, according to the latest toll from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That’s an average of 94 people each day.

The state also reported 9,760 new confirmed cases of the virus Thursday, a drop from the past two days that sunk the seven-day average to 11,816, the lowest since July 22, according to Thursday’s data from the CDC.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID in Florida dropped below 10,000 for the first time since late July, a 19% decline over the past week, according to data from the Florida Hospital Association.

The large number of new reported deaths were spread out over the past two weeks. Deaths are counted on the day they occur, not the day they are reported, and can take up to two weeks or more to be reflected in the data.

At least 2,400 Floridians have died through the first two weeks of September.

The sevne-day average for new deaths rose to 362, the second-highest level of September. August was the deadliest month of the pandemic, when 8,144 died, according to CDC data.
