MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A winter weather system is making its way toward the Mid-South.

A winter weather advisory is in place for several counties in North Mississippi, including Tate, Marshall and Panola counties.

While its expected to bypass the Memphis metro area, road crews in Mississippi and Tennessee are keeping a close eye on it.

Tennessee Department of Transportation said crews will be treating bridges, flyovers and trouble areas Monday. Crews will then meet later to assess the weather system and discuss further plans.

In Mississippi, road crews are telling residents to have their cars prepared for the cold weather.

Mississippi Department of Transportation said to always leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you on potentially icy roads.

You should also have essentials in your car in case you get stranded.

"In your car when you're dealing with winter weather, have some water and blankets," MDOT Public Information Officer Jas Smith said. "Food and snacks in case you are there for a long period of time."

Emergency officials said always have at least half a tank of gas in your car.

Check to make sure you have good tire pressure and windshield wiper fluid ahead of any winter weather.

For the home, it's recommended to have a three-day supply of pantry food.

Also make sure you have a flashlight, extra blankets, and if possible, a backup power generator.

You should also have a full week of medication and a good supply of toiletries.

Make sure everyone in your household is covered by stocking up on baby and pet food.
