Sorority remembers Nancy Parker as a woman committed to public service
Nancy Parker was a woman of grace, a woman of class. She was a woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
"Nancy epitomized what it means to be a Delta," said Deborah Augustine Elam a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
"She joined our sisterhood in the Fall of 1985, at Lambda Zeta Chapter, University of Alabama."
Delta Sigma Theta is an international sisterhood that's made up of more than 200,000 college-educated women.
Nancy was among the sisterhood and she committed more than 20 years of her life to the organization.
"I saw her, and I see Nancy, as someone who really lived out the meaning of Delta. Not just the wear red and the glory, but really doing the work; doing the public service," Elam said.
When Parker wasn't telling stories, she was dedicated to Delta.
Most recently, she worked alongside Elam to help plan the 54th national convention and welcomed thousands to New Orleans in July.
Elam said she worked tirelessly to help out wherever she could.
"Being at a laundromat, where it was warm without air conditioning, stuffing 16,000 gift bags for our members. [She] brought her daughter so that her daughter would see the work of Delta."
Parker loved Delta and Delta loved her back.
Elam said she lived and embodied the essence of the sisterhood, and it won't be the same without her hard work and beautiful smile.
"It is tough for us, but I see us using Nancy's life as an example; an example that we will continue to follow in how we can be good Deltas."
