Public health officials gave away almost 50,000 masks over the weekend at events sponsored by the city of Oklahoma City.

More mask giveaways are planned this coming Saturday.

More than 850 cars lined up for free masks this past Saturday, said the city's spokeswoman, Kristy Yager.

Public health experts say masks help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Oklahoma City's ordinance requires residents to wear masks when indoors in most places open to the public.

This coming Saturday's mask giveaways are 9 to 11 a.m. at:

• Classen SAS at Northeast High School, 3100 N Kelley Ave.

• Southern Oaks Community Center, 400 SW 66 St.

Each vehicle receives one box of 50 disposable masks.

Oklahoma reported 869 new COVID-19 cases Monday. The seven-day average (857) was the highest since early August.
