Center Grove 17, Cathedral 13

GREENWOOD – There was magic in the air at Ray Skillman Stadium on Friday night.

In the game of the year, Class 6A top-ranked Center Grove rallied for a touchdown with 16 seconds left to knock off Class 5A No. 1 Cathedral, 17-13.

“It was a big one, definitely,” Center Grove senior Trent Veith said. “It was mostly for bragging rights, but we were able to get the win and now get ready for the playoffs and ready to go get that state championship.”

Veith played a key role in the win, catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tayven Jackson with 16 seconds remaining. The catch came at the end of a 54-yard touchdown drive that started when the Center Grove defense got a stop on a fourth-and-1 run by Cathedral with 1:14 remaining.

► FOR SUBSCRIBERS:Matchup of No. 1 Center Grove vs. No. 1 Cathedral comes down to one yard

Cathedral coach Bill Peebles was faced with the choice of punting or going for the first down. Center Grove was out of timeouts and a first down would have clinched the victory for the Irish (8-1), who came into the game ranked No. 25 in the country by USA Today.

Peebles called for a jet sweep run by Camden Jordan, who was turned back for a 2-yard loss. Peebles said he would go for it again, but might make a different play call.

“Going for it on fourth down was the right call,” Peebles said. “We had not got a lot of yardage on our punts and they were probably going come after it hard. I wish I would have the call back, though. Jake Langdon had been running so hard.”

After the stop by the Center Grove defense, Jackson went to work. On third-and-10 from the Cathedral 43 with 36 seconds left, he completed a 12-yard pass to Connor Delp, then hit Veith for a 17-yard gain to the Cathedral 14.

Jackson, who had been intercepted twice by John Paul Koscielski, including one for a 73-yard touchdown return for the go-ahead score in the third quarter, then found Veith on a flag route for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

“You have to be at your best when it counts and in the last minute he was,” Center Grove coach Eric Moore said of Jackson.

Players yell in excitement at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Ind., Friday, October 16, 2020. Center Grove Trojans defeated Cathedral Fighting Irish, 17-13.

Center Grove, ranked No. 14 in the nation by USA Today, improved to 9-0.

The Trojans led 10-0 midway through the second quarter after a 34-yard field goal by Austin Watson. Center Grove scored its first touchdown on the opening drive of the game on a 7-yard pass from Jackson to Delp.

But Cathedral answered late in the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Nathan McCahill to David Perry. Center Grove’s lead was 10-6 at halftime.

Cathedral took a 13-10 lead with 5:10 left in the third quarter when Koscielski intercepted Jackson’s pass in the flat and returned it 73 yards up the right sideline.

Carson Steele rushed for 127 yards on 21 carries for Center Grove. Delp finished with four catches for 88 yards and Veith had six catches for 76 yards. Jackson was 12-for-21 passing for 184 yards.

Nathan McCahill was 10-for-17 passing for 126 yards for Cathedral. Langdon rushed for 48 yards on 16 carries. --- Kyle Neddenriep
