Nest Secure Smart Home Security System Gets $100 Price Cut

At $399, Nest Secure is a little more wallet friendly but still pricier than similarly equipped DIY security starter kits from Abode ($299) and SimpliSafe ($229). Nest Secure earned a 'good' rating in our review, though the SimpliSafe Home Security System is our Editors' Choice.

Nest Secure

When PCMag reviewed the Nest Secure, we liked its stylish design and found it easy to install, but griped about it being "quite expensive." Fortunately, the DIY smart home security system is getting a price cut that should make it a little more wallet-friendly.

Nest has slashed $100 off the price of Nest Secure, bringing it down from $499 to $399. The kit includes several products: an "all-in-one security base" called Nest Guard; two Nest Detect sensors that can be placed on windows or doors to keep tabs on whether they're open or closed; and a pair of Nest Tag fobs that attach to your keychain, letting you arm and disarm the alarm system without a passcode.

At $399, Nest Secure is still more pricey than similarly equipped DIY security starter kits from Abode (normally $279, but discounted to $249 this week for Father's Day) and SimpliSafe ($229).

If you need additional Nest Detect sensors, those are getting cheaper, too. Each extra Nest Detect sensor will now set you back $49, down from $59. Similar sensors from Abode go for $25 each and SimpliSafe's are $14.99 apiece.

Alphabet-owned Nest first introduced Secure in September and launched it the following month. Nest Secure earned a "good" rating in our review, though the SimpliSafe Home Security System is our Editors' Choice for DIY home security systems.

Meanwhile, when it comes to keeping their homes safe, consumers trust smart home security devices, but only 17 percent currently have them installed in their houses, a recent PCMag survey revealed. In terms of what's holding people back from buying such products, 40 percent said cost is a concern.
