HERNDON, VA — It looks like the Silver Line extension is going to be delayed again. Riders will likely not be able to take Metro to Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County until the spring or summer 2021, according to news reports.

While the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will own and operate the six new stations and 11.4 miles of track once service is open, it's the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority that's responsible for building them.

“We’re waiting for them [MWAA] to come back to us on a date. My best guess, it would be spring of next year,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld told a D.C. Council committee Wednesday, as reported by WTOP.

Wiedefeld's guess was even less optimistic than estimates given by the Airports Authority's construction contractors who said earlier this month the Silver Line work wouldn't be completed until early 2021.

“As we have always said, WMATA will set the date to begin passenger service,” Airports Authority project spokeswoman Marcia McAllister told WTOP. “The Airports Authority is moving forward and working with our contractors and with WMATA to get this project completed.”
