TWO ELDERLY COUPLES KILLED IN TURNPIKE CRASH WITH TRUCK

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

A Palm Beach County couple was one of two South Florida couples that were killed when a truck lost control, crossed the median and struck their car traveling in the opposite direction on Florida’s Turnpike Sunday afternoon in Osceola County.

Passengers Morris Simon, 82, and Beatrice Simon, 81, of Delray Beach, died at local hospitals. Irving Blumenthal, 88, and Frances Blumenthal, 86, of Tamarac, died at the scene. Irving Blumenthal was driving.

The crash is thought to be weather related, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

“They were very good neighbors. Very friendly,” said Alfred Robbins, who lives a few doors from the Blumenthals in Tamarac’s Woodmont neighborhood.

Jerry Mann, 60, of Shady Dale, Ga., was driving a 2000 Chevrolet 1500 in the southbound lane near Kenansville when he lost control, crossed a 33-foot grassy median and struck the back of a Ford Explorer and the front of the Blumenthals’ 2001 Lincoln Continental, authorities said.

Mann was ejected from his vehicle and was listed in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center. His passenger suffered minor injuries. The Explorer’s driver was not injured. The crash was not alcohol-related, authorities said.
