Man Sentenced For Bank Robbery, Bomb Threats

The Ogemaw County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says a Bay County man has been sentenced in the 34th District Court to 47 1/2 years to 70 years in prison for bank robberies and bomb threats in six counties.

The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says Michael Mier, 34, has been sentenced to 288 months to 60 years for one count bank robbery, 570 months to 70 years for each of two counts of armed robbery, and 380 months to 60 years for all eight counts of false report or threat of terrorism.

Mier was sentenced as a habitual offender fourth offense on all counts.

The sentencing comes after Oscoda, Roscommon, Crawford, Iosco, Arenac and Ogemaw Counties were affected in the early morning of Sept. 6, 2019, when Mier called in multiple false bomb threats to schools and hospitals in order to divert police away from the Mercantile Bank in Rose City.

At about 9:15 a.m., Mier committed an armed robbery against two bank tellers and robbed the bank of over $5,000 in cash. Mier was arrested several hours later when he was found cowering in a corn field in Arenac County.

The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says a representative from the Mercantile Bank, along with representatives from local schools and hospitals, spoke about how Mier’s crimes caused long term psychological and emotional trauma to the victims of his crimes.

“The victims did an excellent job of informing the Court of the impact of Defendant Mier’s crimes in their own personal lives, and the upheaval and turmoil suffered by the collective communities,” stated Ogemaw County Prosecutor LaDonna Schultz.

Mier was transported Monday to the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson County to begin his sentence.
